Domestic violence remains a pervasive and devastating issue for women across the United States. Too often it is hidden, misunderstood, and under-reported. But healing is possible—with the right support, resources, and a community that cares. At Heart of Gold Shelter, we’re committed to walking alongside survivors as they reclaim their lives with dignity and hope.

The Scope of the Problem

  • According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, more than 1 in 3 women (about 35.6%) in the U.S. have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

  • The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that over 61 million women in the U.S. have experienced psychological aggression by an intimate partner during their lifetime.

  • It is estimated that 85% of intimate partner violence victims are women.

These figures show that domestic violence against women is not a marginal issue—it is a societal crisis.

Why It Matters

Domestic violence doesn’t just cause physical harm—it damages mental health, economic stability, and personal dignity. For many women:

  • Leaving an abusive relationship is one of the most dangerous times of the cycle.

  • Abuse often continues behind closed doors, with survivors feeling isolated, powerless, and afraid to seek help.

  • Without adequate support, survivors may face homelessness, financial instability, job loss, or repeat victimisation.

What to Look For: Recognising Abuse

Abuse doesn’t always show up as visible bruises. It may be:

  • Emotional/psychological: insults, threats, isolation

  • Economic: controlling finances, sabotaging employment

  • Sexual: coercion, assault

  • Physical: hitting, choking, restraining.

When you see a friend or sister exhibiting fear of their partner, losing independence, or being isolated, these may be signs of abuse.

How You Can Help

Whether you’re a friend, family member, professional, or community advocate, you can make a difference:

  1. Listen and believe: Let survivors know they are not alone and that what they experienced matters.

  2. Share resources: One crucial phone number is the Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

  3. Support safe exit: Leaving an abusive relationship takes planning and support. Encourage safety planning, legal advice, and financial assistance.

  4. Volunteer or donate: Contribute your time or resources to organisations that provide housing, counselling, job readiness and hygiene essentials.

  5. Raise awareness: Use your voice—share posts, host conversations, participate in awareness events to break the stigma.

How Heart of Gold Shelter Steps In

At Heart of Gold Shelter, we deliver concrete, compassionate support tailored for women survivors of domestic violence.

  • Clothed by Gold: We provide new and gently used clothing, shoes and accessories. Why? Dressing for a job interview or court date can restore dignity and open doors.

  • Pampering with Compassion: We deliver toiletries, bath towels, laundry supplies—small but meaningful items that rebuild self-worth and comfort.

  • Emergency Hotel Stays: When traditional shelters are full or unavailable, we provide hotel stays so women don’t have to return to dangerous situations.

  • Holistic Support & Community: From referral links to crisis hotlines to ongoing advocacy and volunteer opportunities, we create a community where survivors are seen, heard and empowered.

Why This Work Matters—Now

Every woman who is given safety, support and a chance to rebuild is a victory—both for her and for our community. Studies show that without intervention, survivors are at risk of further harm, job loss, homelessness or repeated abuse. With your help, we can reduce that risk and open a path toward hope.

If you believe in dignity, hope and second chances, we invite you to join us:

  • Donate clothing, toiletries, gift cards or funds.

  • Volunteer your time or skills.

  • Share our mission and help spread awareness. Your support means more than you might realise—it is a lifeline.
